Batam Island was first inhabited by people wither as the strait since the year 231 BC. The island had become a warlord medan Hang Nadim struggle against the colonists in this use by the government in the decade of 1960s as a logistics base oil on the island of Sambu.

Along with rapid development of Batam Island, in the decade of the 1980s, based on Government Regulation Number 34 year 1983, Batam districts that are part of the Riau Islands regency, enhanced status and became Batam Municipality which has the task in running the administration and governance and social development made mendudukung Batam Authority.
In the era of reform at the end of the decade of the 1990s, with the Law number 53 of 1999, the administrative Batam Municipality changed status and became autonomous regions, namely the Government of Batam City to perform the function of governance and development to include with the Batam Authority
