Tribal Nation
Batam Society is a heterogeneous society that consists of various tribes and groups. Some of the tribe is the dominant ethnic Malay, Minang, Batak, Makassar, Java, Flores, Chinese and others. With the culture wither and uphold Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Batam be conducive to do activities in the economic, social and political culture in the community. Until December 2008, Batam has been inhabited for approximately 919,449 inhabitants and a population growth rate high enough. In the period of year 2001 to year 2008 population growth has a number average 8 percent over the year.
Religion
Islam is the majority religion in the city of Batam. Masjid ( mousqe) Raya Batam that is located in the middle of town, near the square, the mayor office and the DPRD office became a symbol of religious communities Batam. Christian and Catholic are also held by many Batam community, mainly originating from the Batak ethnic and Flores. Buddhist religion adopted by most Chinese citizens. Batam Vihara which reputedly has the largest in Southeast Asia, namely Vihara Duta Maitreya.
Languages
English language is used as a day-to-day. The local language is also used by the people who come from other areas, such as language Minang, Batak language, Java language, makasar language, and also the Chinese language. It so happens because It is a place where various tribes met
